Market Overview

Energy storage assets generate revenue through three primary channels: ancillary services, capacity market mechanisms, and wholesale energy trading.

Grid operators rely on stabilization assets, such as Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), to maintain grid reliability. These assets provide ancillary services, which include frequency regulation, voltage control, reserve capacity, and black start capabilities. These merchant-style services are critical for grid security and operate on a market-driven basis.

Capacity markets enable grid operators to secure sufficient generation capacity to meet rising electricity demand. Through long-term contracts, these mechanisms provide energy storage assets with stable, contracted revenue streams over extended periods, enhancing portfolio predictability.

Additionally, energy storage systems capture value by storing electricity during low-demand periods and releasing it during high-demand peaks. This often aligns with times when renewable generation exceeds consumption, allowing assets to earn merchant revenue through wholesale energy trading in most markets.
